Sub-editor

Also: sub, subbing, subeditor

The editor who checks, corrects and trims a reporter's copy, writes the headline, and gets it ready for the page.

The sub-editor (or sub) is the last line of defence before print. They fix the facts, tighten the prose, cut it to length, write the head and caption, and catch the howler that would have embarrassed everyone. Good subbing is invisible. Simon's factsheet on what subbing is makes the case for why every reporter should respect the desk.
