Spike

Also: spiked, to spike

To kill a story so it never runs. From the old metal spike editors jammed rejected copy onto.

When an editor spikes your story, it is dead: too thin, too risky, overtaken by events, or just beaten. The word comes from the literal spike on the subs' desk where rejected copy went to die. Getting spiked stings, but every reporter wears it. Ask why, fix the reason, and pitch the next one harder.
