Kill fee

A reduced payment a freelancer gets when a commissioned story is accepted but then not published.

If an editor commissions you, you deliver, and they then decide not to run it, a kill fee is the partial payment that covers your work. It is usually a fraction of the full rate, and it should be agreed in writing up front. No kill-fee clause means you can do the job properly and still be paid nothing. Get it in the commission.
