Galley

Also: proof, galley proof

A proof copy of a story or page, pulled before printing so it can be checked and corrected.

A galley, or proof, is the test print you read with a pen in hand, hunting the typo that survived everything else. The term predates computers but the job never went away: reading proofs is the last chance to catch the error that becomes tomorrow's correction. Read them cold, read them slowly, read the headline twice.
