A short code word that labels a story through production so everyone knows which file is which.
A slug is the one-word handle a story carries from filing to print: FLOOD, BUDGET, ELECTION-MAIN. It keeps the newsroom from mixing up versions and tells the subs at a glance what they are holding. On the web the same idea survives as the URL slug, the readable bit at the end of the address, like this page.
