Chief of staff

Also: COS

The newsroom editor who runs the daily diary, assigns reporters to stories and decides what gets covered.

The chief of staff is the traffic controller of a newsroom. They hold the diary, hand out the rounds, send you to the fire and decide whether your story idea is worth a morning. Keep the chief of staff happy and informed; they decide what you work on and, often, whether you are any good.
