The shape of a story
Tail
Also: payoff
The last few lines of a story. In hard news it is the least vital detail; in a feature it is the payoff that lands the ending.
In a tightly subbed news story the tail is the bit you can lose to fit the space, by design. In a feature it is the opposite: the tail, or payoff, is the line you have been building toward, the one the reader remembers. Knowing which kind of story you are writing tells you how much to spend on the ending.
