The shape of a story

Inverted pyramid

The classic news structure: most important information first, least important last, so a story can be cut from the bottom.

The inverted pyramid is the oldest trick in news writing and still the most useful. You front-load the who, what, where, when and why, then taper off into detail. It survives because it serves two masters: the reader in a hurry, who gets the point fast, and the sub on deadline, who can trim from the foot without rewriting.
