The shape of a story

Standfirst

Also: sell, deck

The short block of intro text between the headline and the body, setting up the story and tempting the reader in.

You see standfirsts on features and long reads: a sentence or two, bigger than body text, that bridges the headline and the first par. British and Australian papers call it a standfirst; American ones often call it a deck. It is a sales pitch, not a summary, so it should make a promise the story keeps.
