Paraphrase

Restating what someone said in your own words while keeping their meaning. Close cousin of the indirect quote.

To paraphrase is to carry a source's point across in clearer or shorter words without putting it in quote marks. It is how you tame a rambling answer or a tangle of jargon. The duty is accuracy: a paraphrase that bends the meaning is worse than a clumsy direct quote. When in doubt, quote them straight.
