Indirect quote

Also: reported quote, indirect quotes

A speaker's meaning reported in your own words, without quotation marks, still credited to them.

An indirect, or reported, quote summarises what someone said without using their exact words: "The minister said the plan would create jobs." It is how you handle the long, the dull and the legally risky stretches of an interview, saving the quote marks for the lines worth hearing verbatim. The trick is to summarise fairly.
