Off the record
Information a source gives you on the understanding you will not publish it or name them. Often misunderstood, so pin it down.
Off the record strictly means you cannot use it at all, only let it guide you. The trouble is everyone defines it slightly differently, so spell out what you both mean before they start talking. Break an off-the-record deal and you burn the source and your name with them. It is a promise, not a formality.
