Journalists' slang for a story, particularly a lively, readable one built around a strong narrative.
To call a piece a good yarn is high praise in a newsroom: it means a story people will actually read, one with a beginning, a middle and an end, and a human angle that carries them through. The word can cover anything from a hard news report to a feature, but it leans towards colour and narrative rather than dry fact. Editors send reporters out to get a yarn, not to collect a press release. The skill is in the telling: find the people, the detail and the turn of events that make a set of facts worth reading.
