Syndication
The sale of the same article, column or cartoon to many different publications, earning the writer repeat fees from one piece of work.
Syndication is how a freelancer makes one piece of work pay several times: you sell it to a paper in one city, then to non-competing papers in others, or to an agency that places it for you. The trick is to sell first rights only, so the piece stays yours to sell again. Columns and cartoons travel best, because they are not tied to a single market. Done well, it turns a day's work into a long tail of income.
