Shorthand
A system of rapid symbol writing that lets a reporter take down speech word for word, faster than longhand.
Shorthand is the old skill that still earns its keep: systems like Pitman and Teeline let a reporter capture speech at the speed it is spoken, which a recorder cannot always be trusted to do, especially in a court where devices may be banned. A clean shorthand note is also a defence if a quote is later challenged. Many newsrooms and courts still expect it.
