The shape of a story

Nut graf

Also: nut graph, nutgraf

The paragraph, usually just after the lede, that tells the reader what the story is about and why it matters now.

If the lede is the hook, the nut graf is the contract. It is the paragraph that nails down the point of the whole piece, often the third or fourth par, and it is where you justify the reader's time. Feature writers live and die by it. A weak nut graf is why a reader bails at the jump.
