Contempt of court

Also: contempt

Publishing something that could prejudice a fair trial or defy a court order. It can land a journalist in jail.

Once someone is charged, the rules change. Publish a prior conviction, a confession or anything that could sway a jury before the verdict, and you risk contempt of court, which carries fines and even prison. Suppression orders are not suggestions. When a matter is before the courts, what you must leave out matters as much as what you put in.
