One reason I can't help students select a publication to write for is because there's 10,000 titles on sale in Australia. I can't personally keep up with more than about 10. In my first letter to students I mention the Marketplace book. I'm not a big supporter of it, because it's merely a list and never a substitute for haunting your newsagent's shop and FINDING publications. This is some guff emailed to me:
The Australian Writer's Marketplace has well and truly established itself as "the writer's bible". In fact the new edition has been so popular that the first print run sold out in just six months! Due to overwhelming demand the book has just been reprinted and copies are now available directly from the publisher. Whether you're looking to be published for the first time or seeking new opportunities, this information packed resource book will give you all the information you need to sell your writing in Australia and New Zealand. Over 2200 listings cover newspapers, journals, magazines, publishers, writing competitions, literary agents, manuscript appraisers, script markets, literary events and writing courses. Don't miss out. Stock is limited and available only from the publisher. Order your copy of The Australian Writer's Marketplace now ($42.95 plus $5.95 postage and handling) by calling freecall 1800 060 555 or click onto www.australianwritersmarketplace.com
Simon's comment: This stuff above is "advertising-speak". However, the book is a pretty good list (though that's ALL it is). Don't buy this book unless you intend to buy publications and read and study them.
